REPORT: 1ST MEETING EMAS MENTORING

EMAS Bureau again presented the report for our program. This program is actually our first weekly meeting with the mentees after the Mahabbah Camp (MC). The participation for this time was very encouraging, 68 students attended this meeting out of 74 students who have come for MC.

During this program, there are 3 sessions involved. The 1st session was focusing on Mathematics. Second session was concentrating on Science and the third session was English session. In each session, mentors have the modules to guide them and these modules based on the syllabus that the mentees learnt in school.

For this weekly meeting, we assigned three or four mentees to each mentors. Then, the mentors will be grouped in one big group that consists of three mentors per group. Therefore, for each big group, there are three mentors and more or less nine to twelve mentees. This big group is the same group that they form during Mahabbah Camp. The purpose of doing this is actually to create a convenience and competitive study environment to the mentees. At the same time, it also helps the mentors to control the mentees in case one of the mentors absent on that day.

In the 1st session for Mathematics module, we did the Explorace. Mentees were asked to be in their big group and they have to work in-group to complete the Explorace. At each checkpoint, they are required to do the task that related to Mathematics. Most of the task are basically related to what they have learnt in the school. Apart from that, this module also stressed how the mentees should apply their knowledge to solve the problems given. This module is meant to be finished within 2 hours.

In 2nd session for Science subject, mentees were given the question on the topic of Human’s basic needs. The mentees answered the question with the help and guidance from the mentors. The questions supposed to be completed within one hour. Then, each big group were required to prepare a drawing of life - cycle of a few animals. Each group were assigned with different types of animals. After that, all the groups gathered at the KAED Gallery for the presentation session. Every group presented the life – cycle for the animal that they have done, while the other mentees jotted it down in the sheet given.

We had a break at 1.00pm. During this time, mentees ware trained to be discipline and patient while waiting for lunchtime. They need to wait for their members before eating and they recited du’a together. After lunch, mentors and mentees performed Zuhur prayer congregationally. Mentors also observed the mentees in taking ablutions to ensure that mentees do it in correct way. After the Zuhr Prayer, mentor listened and checked the recitation of Surah al-Fatihah of each mentee.

At 2.30pm, we started the 3rd session. It was an English session. Mentors were given 2 hours to finish two modules. First module purposely designed to train the mentee to speak English with confident. Thus, mentors prepared a story and mentees need to read the story given. Mentors are responsible to correct their pronunciation and guide them to understand the story. Any new or difficult word found by the mentee had been discussed and mentees wrote them in the vocabulary book. In second module, mentee prepared the drama based on the story read before. The mentors and mentees discussed together the dialogue for the drama. Then the mentees presented the drama to the mentors. The purpose is to develop the confident level of mentees to voice out their thinking and participate in the group.

At 4.30pm, we finished the modules. The mentees gathered at the KAED Gallery again. There, one of the mentors conducted the session to recap what have been studied during the programs. Next, we had our tea break. After that, mentors and mentees performed Asar prayer. Then we ended the program for the day. The mentors sent the mentees to their parents.

REPORT: MAHABBAH CAMP

It is a great pleasure for Bureau EMAS to share here our most awaited program for this semester, the Mahabbah Camp 2009. We are glad to share all the joys, experiences and exciting stories that we have gone through during two-day program.

The story begins…

14th FEBRAURY 2009
As early as 8.00am, we opened the registration counter. There were 74 students from SRI Al Huda came for registration. Most of the students were walk - in participants, as they did not register their participation prior to the date of program. Actually, we were so surprised with the numbers of participants because the night before the program, we had been informed by the school that only 11 students wanted to join our program.

After registration, the parents were ushered to the LT3 for opening ceremony and briefing session. The program was officially opened by the speech delivered by Puan Rosnani, the teacher of SRI Al Huda. Then, the Head of Bureau EMAS cum the Program Manager for Mahabbah Camp gave the briefing about EMAS program and also handled the Question & Answer session with the parents. We got some questions from the parents, also the comments, recommendations and supports. For each recommendations and comments that we get, Insyallah, we will use it to improve our management. And for the supports that the parents gave to us, we appreciate it.

While the parents attended the ceremony, the mentees were gathered at one place and the mentors had a brief session with them to do the mass module. They are also required to store their belongings at Musafir rooms at Level 3 & 4, SHAS Mosque. At 11.30am, the mentors ushered the participants to the Kuliyyah of Education. We gathered at LR 5 & 6, the two classes that we used during the program, which we called as Hall. Then, we started our first session. The mentors and committees of the programs introduced themselves, and we also spelt out the dos and don’ts and regulations that they should abide by during the programs and briefed them the flow and activities for the program. After that, the mentees were divided into their groups and the mentors were assigned to each of the group. Each group consisted of 3 mentors. At 1.30pm, the mentees and mentors prepared themselves for the Zuhr prayer. After Zuhr prayer, we had our lunch.

The second session started at 2.00pm, it was the Ta’aruf, Ice Breaking and Mind Setting session. The mentors conducted this session in their own groups. The mentees and the mentors got to know each others while at the same time the mentors stressed to the mentees to set a clear intention while attending this program. During the session, they also required to set the name of the group, the trade mark, and prepared a robot using the newspapers, bottles and straws. The purpose of this session is to create the cooperation among the group members, because though they knew each other, still they got problems to work in group.

At 4.30 pm, the mentors and mentees prepared themselves for the Asar prayer. After Asar, we had a Riadhah session, it was lead by one of the mentors while other mentors supervising the mentees. We did a few games in this session as the purposes of this session ware to make them felt relax and be cooperative in the group. We stopped at 6.30pm and we had our dinner. The mentees were ushered to the SHAS Mosque for self preparation and Maghrib prayer. After Maghrib, the mentees and the mentors gathered at Kuliyyah of Education again. There we had recitation Al-Mathurat and performed Isya’ prayer. At 9.00pm, we had our last session for the first day, it was Edu-Game. For this session, we provided questions for them to be solved in the group, we wanted to evaluate their performance per group basis as we allocated mark to the group for each games that we asked them to solve.

The session for the day ended at 11.00pm, after that we had supper. The mentees were brought back to the Mosque and they slept there.

The story continues…

15th FEBRUARY 2009

We started the session for the second day at 4.30am. It was Qiyamullail and presentation of video about Palestin. The purpose of video presentation is to inculcate the awareness among them about the current issues that happened to the Muslims in other country. It followed by the Subuh prayer, tazkirah and the recitation of Al-Mathurat. After that, the mentees were allowed to prepare themselves and get ready with track suit as the next session was Explorace. At 7.30am, the mentees gathered at the Kuliyyah of Education and we had our exercises and warm up. Then we had our breakfast. At 8.30am, we started the Explorace. The mentees were required to complete 8 check points and at each check point they will be tested on what they have learnt in the school. Most of the tasks at the check points required them to be creative and on top of that, they should be in group. Still, there were a few mentees who loved to wander around alone to explore the Kuliyyah rather than complete our Explorace. At 10.30am, the first group finished the Explorace and later followed by the other groups. The mentees were gathered at the Hall to announce the winner group.

The mentees were in their groups again and the mentors took charge of them. The mentors explained the resolution of the Explorace and also motivated the mentees about their self-potential. At 11.30am, the session ended and we had our tea break. The next session, the mentees were given one and half hour to prepare a short play drama to be presented in the closing ceremony. The play drama can be in English or Malay. At 1.00pm, we went back to the Mosque so that the mentees prepared themselves and packed their belongings. After Zuhr prayer, the mentees were ushered to the Mini Auditorium for their lunch and they brought along their belongings as they were going back after finishing the closing ceremony.

After having lunch, we started the “Performance of the Group”. Most of the group presented very interesting stories. The theme of all the stories is “Animals Planet”. All the groups presented their play drama in English except for one group. When it comes to creativity, all the mentees are very energetic. All of them have their own creative ideas, even one of the groups had to do the interview to assign the character in the play drama. Anyway, their courage and confident to speak in front others should be appreciated. After the performance, the mentees had the last session of Group Binding with their mentors. It is basically a session for the mentors and mentees to create the bond among them and also the mentors gave the advices and motivational words to the mentees as the means to encourage them.

Then we arrived to closing ceremony. It was begun with the announcement of the winner group for this program. All the groups received their hampers as they have shown very impressive courage to participate in all activities. The program ended by the closing words from the Program Manager. The mentees dispersed after having tea break and the mentors sent the mentees back to their parents.

The story ends…

Alhamdulillah, despite all the challenges that we faced, we managed to give full commitment and cooperation for this program. Mahabbah Camp is actually the first meeting of mentors with their mentees and also the parents. It is a very important program that will determine the participation of mentors for the programs that we have planned throughout the year. We hope this program has created the momentum for the mentees to further participate in our next programs.

BUKAN JONGKANG-JONGKET

Lia, jomlah pergi usrah Lia, jomlah berdakwah Lia, ummah semakin koyak Lia, jomlah kita bangkit mengubah segalanya

Aku tidak mahu!!Aku kena study!!Markah semester lepas dah cukup teruk gara-gara dakwah, tarbiah dan program!!Aku menyesal megikuti semua itu!!

Bosan!!Dakwah bukan je plainly cerita rububiyah ketuhanan, tapi banyak lagi skopnya.Bukan ke Islam tu syumul.Kalau nak berjaya, kena study. Waktu study, studylah.Esok kalau dah berjaya, aku buatlah kerja dakwah tu.Kalau aku buat kerja dakwah, aku gagal dalam pelajaranku
Kan nanti aku menutup mata orang lain terhadap Islam!!

Lia, dakwah dan pelajaran bukan macam jongkang jongket.

Jongkang jongket? Apa kau merepek ni?

Ya, dakwah dan pelajaran BUKAN macam jongkang jongket. Bila dakwah di atas, pelajaran di bawah!Bila pelajaran di atas, dakwah di bawah!Tu bukan dakwah namanya.Dan tu bukan belajar namanya.

Habis tu?

Hmm, dakwah dan pelajaran kena berkadar terus.Tak boleh inversely proportional.

Apa maksud kau?

Rasa senang hati nak terima ilmu.Kalau orang lain study 1 jam, dia hanya perlu study 10 minit sahaja!!Sebab apa?Sebab ada keberkatan masa dalam studynya itu!!

Aku tak pernah rasa semua itu,Jadi, selama ni kau nak cakap yang aku ikut program tarbiah dan dakwah tu tak ikhlas?

Tak, itu bukan maksud aku!!Cuma kena checklah sikit hati tu,Waktu buat kerja dakwah tu, ada tak berlaku tarik tali dengan Allah?

Apa maksud kau tarik tali dengan Allah?

Ok, aku berikan contoh.

Lia dah faham,Lia kena banyak muhasabah.

Pasti Lia ingat lagi Assyahid Sheikh Ahmad Yassin. Dia cacat. Duduk di atas kerusi roda. Tapi apa yang telah dia lakukan? HAMMAS berdiri dengan izzah!! Musuh menggeruninya!!

Lia, kita sempurna. Ayuh lakukan sesuatu untuk Islam!!Ayuh berada dalam saf perjuangan!!

REPORT: INDUCTION EMAS

Congratulations!!!
Welcome to all new and existing mentors. To new mentors that had successfully passed the interview, welcome to EMAS bureau, you are now a part of Titian Wahyu members. To existing mentors, we really appreciate your commitment to stay with us and hopefully this year, we can make a significant achievement.

EMAS Bureau had organized an Induction Course for all mentors immediately after completing the interview sessions on 28th and 29th January. This was a one and half day course that had been held at the Kem Ecokid, Alang Sedayu, Gombak. Though by name it was an induction, we actually focused towards training the mentors and also enhancing their mentoring skills during this induction.

31st January 2009

The participants gathered at the main stairs (In front of Admin Building) at 2.00pm. The participants consisted of 31 mentors and 3 committees. At 2.30pm, we set off and headed to the camp that was just 15 minutes journey by car. Once we reached at the camp, the participants were allowed to spend around 15 minutes to settle down before we started with the first session.

The presence of Tuan Syed, the President of BAKA, to officiate the opening ceremony was so much welcomed. His speech really enlightened the mentors to understand what kind of students that they will be mentoring and also the expectations that has been put on them. He also mentioned about the last year mentoring program, though we are not achieving what he have expected from us, he still optimistic with this program. He wanted to see improvement in the program and also better management for this year. InsyaAllah. The opening speech ended around 4.30pm, therefore we had a break for Asr prayer and tea.

The first session was Ta’aruf / ice breaking session. The new and existing mentors had this opportunity to know each other. It is very important for all mentors to develop a bond among them so that they can work together to achieve the objectives of the program and also to create the synergy in the group. We also divided the mentors into group. In the group, they had been assigned to create the name for the group, the trademark, the identity, and others. This session ended at 6.30pm, and then we had our dinner and self preparation for the Maghrib prayer.

Maghrib prayer was conducted congregationally by one of the mentors. While waiting for Isya’ prayer, we had recitation of Al-Mathurat and tazkirah. The tazkirah was delivered by Bro Khairul Anwar. He addressed some important points on being good mentors. After performing Isya’ prayer, we began the second session. It was a workshop on the Basic Mentoring Skills conducted by Bro Khairulzain. The participants were introduced to the quality of a mentor. They also had been instructed to practice in group the skills that had been told to them. At 11.30pm, the session ended. The participants dispersed and went back for sleep.

1 February 2009

We had qiyamullail at 5.00am. At 6.15am, we performed Subuh prayer congregationally, followed by the recitation of Al-Mathurat. After that, we had a short session for the participants to voice out their opinions, they were welcomed to speak on any issue. Interestingly, the story of the ghost at the hostel became a very hot story.

At 7.00pm, we did a simple exercise and also practiced some mass module. The mass module mostly used during the meeting with the mentees. It is important for the new mentors to have some basic ideas on this so that they can handle their mentees during the program. For the existing mentors, it might be that some of them already forget the mass module, so it is advisable for them to practice the mass module.

The first session for the day started after the breakfast, which was the session with Mdm Martinelli Hashim. A very inspiring speech by her that (I think) helped to build the awareness among the participants on the importance role that we (the students, the teenagers) can play in correcting the social problems in the society. She also shared with us some interesting fact what had been achieved by the nation through the mentoring system. At least, the mentors can see the significant of mentoring program from broader perspective.

After that, we continued with the second session, a talk by Bro Naim. The talk was basically about the role of a mentor, the preparation that a mentor should have before becoming a mentor and also he gave out some tips to be a good mentor. Then, we had our break for lunch and also Zuhr prayer. The third session, also the last session for the induction, was a talk on module preparation, it was delivered by Bro Zaidi. Since EMAS is a new mentoring program, we are still lacking in term of preparing the module, therefore all mentors should be occupied with the knowledge on how to prepare a module, so that we can work together, brainstorm and develop a good module.

At 4.30pm, we received a visit from our Titian Wahyu Advisor, Mdm Noraini Ariffin. She was invited to deliver her speech and officially closed our Induction Course. The participants returned back to the university at 5.30pm.

In a nutshell
The organizing committees really hope this Induction Course have benefited the mentors. Hopefully, the mentors gained as much knowledge as they can from the talks, workshop, and speeches during the programs. We are looking forwards to work together with all mentors for this year’s programs.
