REPORT: 1ST MEETING EMAS MENTORING

EMAS Bureau again presented the report for our program. This program is actually our first weekly meeting with the mentees after the Mahabbah Camp (MC). The participation for this time was very encouraging, 68 students attended this meeting out of 74 students who have come for MC.

During this program, there are 3 sessions involved. The 1st session was focusing on Mathematics. Second session was concentrating on Science and the third session was English session. In each session, mentors have the modules to guide them and these modules based on the syllabus that the mentees learnt in school.

For this weekly meeting, we assigned three or four mentees to each mentors. Then, the mentors will be grouped in one big group that consists of three mentors per group. Therefore, for each big group, there are three mentors and more or less nine to twelve mentees. This big group is the same group that they form during Mahabbah Camp. The purpose of doing this is actually to create a convenience and competitive study environment to the mentees. At the same time, it also helps the mentors to control the mentees in case one of the mentors absent on that day.

In the 1st session for Mathematics module, we did the Explorace. Mentees were asked to be in their big group and they have to work in-group to complete the Explorace. At each checkpoint, they are required to do the task that related to Mathematics. Most of the task are basically related to what they have learnt in the school. Apart from that, this module also stressed how the mentees should apply their knowledge to solve the problems given. This module is meant to be finished within 2 hours.

In 2nd session for Science subject, mentees were given the question on the topic of Human’s basic needs. The mentees answered the question with the help and guidance from the mentors. The questions supposed to be completed within one hour. Then, each big group were required to prepare a drawing of life - cycle of a few animals. Each group were assigned with different types of animals. After that, all the groups gathered at the KAED Gallery for the presentation session. Every group presented the life – cycle for the animal that they have done, while the other mentees jotted it down in the sheet given.

We had a break at 1.00pm. During this time, mentees ware trained to be discipline and patient while waiting for lunchtime. They need to wait for their members before eating and they recited du’a together. After lunch, mentors and mentees performed Zuhur prayer congregationally. Mentors also observed the mentees in taking ablutions to ensure that mentees do it in correct way. After the Zuhr Prayer, mentor listened and checked the recitation of Surah al-Fatihah of each mentee.

At 2.30pm, we started the 3rd session. It was an English session. Mentors were given 2 hours to finish two modules. First module purposely designed to train the mentee to speak English with confident. Thus, mentors prepared a story and mentees need to read the story given. Mentors are responsible to correct their pronunciation and guide them to understand the story. Any new or difficult word found by the mentee had been discussed and mentees wrote them in the vocabulary book. In second module, mentee prepared the drama based on the story read before. The mentors and mentees discussed together the dialogue for the drama. Then the mentees presented the drama to the mentors. The purpose is to develop the confident level of mentees to voice out their thinking and participate in the group.

At 4.30pm, we finished the modules. The mentees gathered at the KAED Gallery again. There, one of the mentors conducted the session to recap what have been studied during the programs. Next, we had our tea break. After that, mentors and mentees performed Asar prayer. Then we ended the program for the day. The mentors sent the mentees to their parents.
