REPORT: INDUCTION EMAS

Congratulations!!!
Welcome to all new and existing mentors. To new mentors that had successfully passed the interview, welcome to EMAS bureau, you are now a part of Titian Wahyu members. To existing mentors, we really appreciate your commitment to stay with us and hopefully this year, we can make a significant achievement.

EMAS Bureau had organized an Induction Course for all mentors immediately after completing the interview sessions on 28th and 29th January. This was a one and half day course that had been held at the Kem Ecokid, Alang Sedayu, Gombak. Though by name it was an induction, we actually focused towards training the mentors and also enhancing their mentoring skills during this induction.

31st January 2009

The participants gathered at the main stairs (In front of Admin Building) at 2.00pm. The participants consisted of 31 mentors and 3 committees. At 2.30pm, we set off and headed to the camp that was just 15 minutes journey by car. Once we reached at the camp, the participants were allowed to spend around 15 minutes to settle down before we started with the first session.

The presence of Tuan Syed, the President of BAKA, to officiate the opening ceremony was so much welcomed. His speech really enlightened the mentors to understand what kind of students that they will be mentoring and also the expectations that has been put on them. He also mentioned about the last year mentoring program, though we are not achieving what he have expected from us, he still optimistic with this program. He wanted to see improvement in the program and also better management for this year. InsyaAllah. The opening speech ended around 4.30pm, therefore we had a break for Asr prayer and tea.

The first session was Ta’aruf / ice breaking session. The new and existing mentors had this opportunity to know each other. It is very important for all mentors to develop a bond among them so that they can work together to achieve the objectives of the program and also to create the synergy in the group. We also divided the mentors into group. In the group, they had been assigned to create the name for the group, the trademark, the identity, and others. This session ended at 6.30pm, and then we had our dinner and self preparation for the Maghrib prayer.

Maghrib prayer was conducted congregationally by one of the mentors. While waiting for Isya’ prayer, we had recitation of Al-Mathurat and tazkirah. The tazkirah was delivered by Bro Khairul Anwar. He addressed some important points on being good mentors. After performing Isya’ prayer, we began the second session. It was a workshop on the Basic Mentoring Skills conducted by Bro Khairulzain. The participants were introduced to the quality of a mentor. They also had been instructed to practice in group the skills that had been told to them. At 11.30pm, the session ended. The participants dispersed and went back for sleep.

1 February 2009

We had qiyamullail at 5.00am. At 6.15am, we performed Subuh prayer congregationally, followed by the recitation of Al-Mathurat. After that, we had a short session for the participants to voice out their opinions, they were welcomed to speak on any issue. Interestingly, the story of the ghost at the hostel became a very hot story.

At 7.00pm, we did a simple exercise and also practiced some mass module. The mass module mostly used during the meeting with the mentees. It is important for the new mentors to have some basic ideas on this so that they can handle their mentees during the program. For the existing mentors, it might be that some of them already forget the mass module, so it is advisable for them to practice the mass module.

The first session for the day started after the breakfast, which was the session with Mdm Martinelli Hashim. A very inspiring speech by her that (I think) helped to build the awareness among the participants on the importance role that we (the students, the teenagers) can play in correcting the social problems in the society. She also shared with us some interesting fact what had been achieved by the nation through the mentoring system. At least, the mentors can see the significant of mentoring program from broader perspective.

After that, we continued with the second session, a talk by Bro Naim. The talk was basically about the role of a mentor, the preparation that a mentor should have before becoming a mentor and also he gave out some tips to be a good mentor. Then, we had our break for lunch and also Zuhr prayer. The third session, also the last session for the induction, was a talk on module preparation, it was delivered by Bro Zaidi. Since EMAS is a new mentoring program, we are still lacking in term of preparing the module, therefore all mentors should be occupied with the knowledge on how to prepare a module, so that we can work together, brainstorm and develop a good module.

At 4.30pm, we received a visit from our Titian Wahyu Advisor, Mdm Noraini Ariffin. She was invited to deliver her speech and officially closed our Induction Course. The participants returned back to the university at 5.30pm.

In a nutshell
The organizing committees really hope this Induction Course have benefited the mentors. Hopefully, the mentors gained as much knowledge as they can from the talks, workshop, and speeches during the programs. We are looking forwards to work together with all mentors for this year’s programs.
